The beach bag that ends tantrums before they start

Beach meltdowns are rarely about the beach. They're about being cold, sandy, hungry, or some combination of all three at 4 p.m. Which means most of them are preventable at the packing stage, the night before, when everyone is still reasonable. Here's the bag that got us through a summer.

The core kit

The two-trip rule

If it doesn't fit in one bag plus one cooler, it stays home. Every extra trip to the car is done while supervising a child near water, or by splitting the adults — neither is worth the third chair. The kid needs water, shade, snacks, and you; everything else is for the adults' comfort, and should compete for space accordingly.

Pack it the night before

Not a metaphor — actually the night before, by the door. Morning-of packing is how sunscreen gets forgotten and how you end up buying a $19 towel at a gas station. The bag by the door is the whole system. Everything in our Beach & Pool lane was chosen with this bag in mind.
